私が禅道場で修行していた頃、ある老僧がこう言っていました。

「好きでやっている坐禅は凡夫だな。しなければならなくてやっている坐禅も素人だ。するのが当たり前になった坐禅が本物だ」

「するのが当たり前になった坐禅」、これこそが生き方にまで練り上げられた坐禅であり、そうなっていくことを修行というのでしょう。

　習慣を持っている人は強い。その人は生き方の形を持っています。どうしてそれが必要なのか。それは、我々がそもそも、「自分でありたくて」自分なのではなく、「自分でなければならなくて」自分なのでもなく、「自分であることになっている」時、はじめて自分を受け容れていられるからだろうと、私は思います。
